I am Mohammad Islam, Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the State University of New York at Oswego. I am also a visiting Fellow at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory at Golden, Colorado.
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin and my PhD degree from Columbia University Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. During my PhD I specialized in the novel synthesis and film deposition of nanomaterials. After PhD, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University on fabrication of nanoscale devices for sensor applications.
My current research interests include:
1. Growth of Functional Nanomaterials for Targeted Application.
2. Rechargeable Lithium ion and Sodium Ion Batteries Based on Environmentally Benign Inverse Spinel – Transition Metal Oxide (ISTMO).
3. Silicon, Tin and Phosphorus Nanoparticles as Anodes for High Performance Lithium ion and Sodium Ion Batteries.
4. Group theoretical approach to Perovskite Ferrites.
My unique contribution to nanoscience and Physics research include:
a. Patented method of electrophoretic deposition of nanoparticles.
b. Rechargeable lithium ion battery based on electrophoretically deposited Cobalt
oxide anode.
c. Comprehensive study of ferrite nanoparticles as sodium ion battery anode.
d. Demonstration of the existence of two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the
interface between two insulating perovskite materials and chemical-tunability-at-
a-distance in 2DEGs to bring all-oxide-electronics one step closer to reality.
e. Group theoretical and Raman spectroscopy study of tilt dynamics, charge
ordering (CO), and topotactic transition in perovskite films.
